Police in Cornwall have issued a warning to the public regarding the circulation of counterfeit bank notes.

Camborne, Pool and Redruth Police have issued a warning to local residents urging them to keep an eye out for counterfeit £20 pounds that have been found to be in circulation in the Camborne area.

The warning was issued on Camborne, Pool and Redruth Police's Facebook social media page and the force reminded local shop keepers to be vigilant and to check tender carefully.

Any notes that are suspected to be counterfeit money should be taken to their local police station.

In the social media post, Camborne, Pool and Redruth Police said: "There have been a number of reports of counterfeit £20 notes in circulation in the Camborne area recently.

"Police are reminding local shop keepers to be vigilant, check tender carefully and take any counterfeit money to their local police station."

According to data from the Bank of England, in 2021 less than 0.0022% of banknotes in circulation in the UK were counterfeit, working out as less than 1 in 40,000 banknotes.

The Bank of England also suggests that a lower level of cash transactions, alongside the increased robustness of the polymer designs of new bank notes, helped to reduce counterfeiting last year.
