Helston's CAST building will be opening its doors to a new ceramics workshop next week.

On Saturday, July 23 and Sunday, July 24 the doors of the studios will be open from 11am until 3pm.

Led by ceramicist and artist Rosanna Martin, 'Brickworks at CAST' will provide access to equipment and expertise, with courses and one-off workshops for anyone wanting to try working with clay for the first time or learn new techniques, and open access sessions for more experienced makers.

CAST also plans to include ceramic sessions as part of its workshop programme for primary school children and Rosanna hopes to offer specially funded sessions for community groups.

Rosanna is a well-respected artist, perhaps best known for her brick-making projects for the Whitegold Festival in St Austell.

Her childhood explorations of the deposits of china clay washed down into the Fal estuary near her grandparents' farm on the Roseland Peninsula, which formed the foundations of her ongoing interest in the properties and potential of local clays.

This history provided the inspiration for a series of community brick-making projects and led to the naming of Brickworks, the much loved open access studio Rosanna started at in Penryn in 2017.

Sadly the Penryn studio closed during the pandemic, but Brickworks will now come back to life at CAST in Penrose Road, Helston.

Rosanna said: "One of the most exciting things about starting Brickworks at CAST is the sense that there is already a community forming around the space, with regulars from the Penryn studio getting back in touch and new interest growing in and around Helston too.

"I really encourage anyone interested in getting involved at any level, from complete beginners to established artists and makers, to get in touch or some along on the opening weekend to say hello!"

It will be free to have a go at throwing a pot or hand moulding a 'kiln god' for anyone visiting the studio, to celebrate the launch of the new space.

If you'd like to keep what you have made, you can pay £5 to have it fired for collection at a later date.
