Two people in Cornwall have been fined for using their mobile phones while driving on Cornish roads.

The incidents, which happened separate from each other, where heard in magistrates courts in both Bodmin and Truro.

Nikolaos Kirsanidis, aged 34, of Black Cross in Newquay appeared in front of magistrates at Bodmin Magistrates' Court on Monday, 27 July on one count of using a handheld mobile phone or device while driving a motor vehicle on a road.

The offence took place at Scorrier in Redruth where Kirsanidis was found to have been using a mobile phone while driving a Smart car on the A30 at Scorrier.

Kirsanidis pleaded guilty to the offence and was fined £40, made to pay a surcharge to fund victim services of £34 and made to pay costs of £90.

He was also disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence for six months due to repeat offending, given six penalty points and had his driving record endorsed.

The court noted how Kirsanidis' guilty plea taken into account when imposing sentence and that no mitigating circumstances or exceptional hardship was found.

Damian Russell Humphries, aged 33, of Trelander in East Truro appeared in front of magistrates at Truro Magistrates' Court on Thursday, June 30, also on one count of using a handheld mobile phone or device while driving a motor vehicle on a road.

The offence took place on August 25 2021 on Station Road in Truro where Humphries was found to have been using a mobile phone while driving.

A guilty verdict was proved in Humphries absence and he was fined £660, made to pay a surcharge to fund victim services of £66, and also made to pay costs of £660 to the Crown Prosecution Service.

He was also disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence for six months due to repeat offending, given six penalty points and had his driving record endorsed.
