After an absence of three years due to Covid, Coverack Carnival returned last week.

Held in the grounds of the Bay Hotel, a large crowd enjoyed the sunny weather and a performance from St Keverne Band.

The band also led the procession from the hotel through the village to the Fisherman's Rest on the harbour.

Under the direction of the conductor Karl Long, the band played for the large crowd until 9pm.

Free burgers for all the competitors were on offer, provided by The Coverack Gig Club, which also hosted a barbecue for the visitors.

This year there were more than 60 entries for the fancy dress competition – the most entries they have ever had.

Chefs from the hotel, Dan Bowden and Will Stapleton, acted as impartial judges, with Liz Hanley supervising as they presented first, second and third place certificates.

In addition to certificates, rosettes for the first three places were awarded by the Carnival Queen, King, and attendants, Olivia, George, Noah, and Esmay.

The tradition of carrying a blanket for donations at the head of the procession was continued and, along with the proceeds of the raffle, more than £400 was raised for local charities.

Hugh Richards, the chairman, used the public address system to thank everyone for their attendance and especially those who had helped to make it such a success.

This event is organised by the Coverack Regatta and Carnival Committee and its chairman, John Brocklebank, added his thanks and reminded everyone that the regatta this year has been replaced by a Water Sports Fun Day on Sunday, August 7 in the early afternoon.

This will be supervised by the Coverack Windsurfing Centre with a range of competitions for all comers.

More information in the village and on the Coverack Website and Facebook page.
