A PENRYN man who spat in the faces of two police officers during the pandemic has been sent to prison for 12 weeks, but has had the sentence suspended for 12 months.

Harry Westwood, aged 22, of Saracen Way, Penryn appeared at Truro Magistrates's Court for sentencing after pleading guilty on May 5 this year to two charges of common assault on an emergency worker.

Both charges were that between February 11 and 12 this year at Penryn he assaulted PC's Clarke and Stewart, emergency workers, namely police officers, acting in the exercise of their functions as such a worker.

For both offences he was committed to prison for 12 weeks suspended for 12 months. Magistrates' said the reason for the sentence was because the offences were so serious and because they were aggravated by the spitting in the face of the two police officers during a pandemic.

Westwood must also comply with the requirements of a 12 month supervision order and must have mental health treatment by or under the direction of We Are With You for 12 sessions.
