Firefighters are using beaters and the fire boat to tackle at woodland fire at a Helford River beauty spot.

Firefighters from Falmouth Fire Station were called to Merthen Wood, Groyne Point, Helford River this afternoon at around 12.35pm after critical control received a call of smoke issuing from woodland.

When they arrived they found up to one acre of woodland smouldering. Due to it being in a rural location and difficult to access the fire boat from Falmouth was deployed to help crews with putting out the fire.

A spokesperson from critical control said: "At 12:35pm Critical Control received a call to smoke issuing from a wooded area. Firefighters from Falmouth Community Fire Station were mobilised to investigate.

"On arrival it was found that approximately one acre of woodland area was smouldering.

"Due to the rural location and difficult access the Fire Boat from Falmouth was also mobilised to assist crews to deal with the fire.

"Firefighters using beaters and with the assistance of the fire boat to pump from open water, are at work extinguishing the fire."

By 6pm it was reported that firefighters were still in attendance making area safe but the fire had been contained using a main jet supplied by fire boat.

The fire is the latest in a series of woodland blazes across Cornwall.

Yesterday More than 40 firefighters battled a wild fire in parkland at Truro.

Cornwall Fire and Rescue received 36 emergency 999 calls following a wild fire in the area of Boscawen Park, Malpas.

Firefighters were still checking for hotspots at the site today.
