Falmouth Town's Manager Andrew Westgarth labelled their 2-1 win over Saltash united in the extra preliminary round of the FA Cup as one of the biggest wins of his career.

Town were low on numbers heading into the tie with their Western League opponents with several first team players missing.

Tim Nixon, Luke Barner, Luke Brabyn, Jack Bowyer, Oli Walker, Cameron Hutchinson, Scott Kellow, Tom Moxham and David Broglino were all absent from the tie while club captain James Ward was only fit enough for the bench following an injury.

It meant that Town had to call on their squad depth for what was their first FA Cup game in 11 years but the side produces a gutsy performance to progress into the next round with strikes from James Swan and Alex Wharton overcoming Callum Merrin's first half strike, while Merrin was then red carded after the break for a second bookable offence.

Speaking after the game Westgarth said: "It is the beauty of cup football. That is what it is all about isn't it? I think a lot of us came in today fearing the worst, it was well documented that we had a lot of players away.

"It is a proud day for the club as a whole. I think the second team won 3-0 against last years champions. We have had pull on them and I thought that the boys that came through were absolutely fantastic. It is one of those ones, I thought Saltash are a very very good side. We obviously went 1-0 down but we stayed in the game.

"I said to the boys 'if we stay in the game the chances will come.' The sending off swung in our favour a bit, we were able to push people on. Then we got a bit of luck, you can look at is a bad luck or good luck with Jack (Bray-Evans) hitting the crossbar, you can say that's unlucky but it fell to Swanny (James Swan). I am absolutely delighted for him to score his first goal.

"Then we just showed a bit of quality, we went for it when they went down to ten men. We went 442. Pushed two up front and caused them a few problems. Swanny has gone out wide right and put a lovely ball into Alex (Wharton) and what a finish.

"Alex has all the tools to be one of the best players around, but just needs to work on that final product and when he gets it right that's evident today. I am so pleased for him."

It hasn't been the easiest starts to the season for Town. In what is their first Western League campaign since the 1982/83 season they were held to a point on the opening day by Wellington before being defeated by fellow Cornish side Millbrook 3-1 in midweek.

But the way they bounced back against Saltash, with a limited squad that included a three minute cameo appearance from Westgarth himself, was one of the biggest moments of the gaffer's career, he said: "I'd actually put it up there as one of the biggest wins of my managerial career. I know people will look at that and go you've won leagues, senior cups, league cups, charity bowl's against good Parkway sides.

"Given what we had out. I had a bit of a sleepless night last night being brutally honest. That is not saying I don't trust the players we have got but when your captain pulls out the night before after so many players missing anyway.

"You think we've worked so hard to get into this league, eight years I have been manager now and really looking forward to playing in the FA Cup and almost feels like you're fighting with one hand behind your back. It's a proud proud day, I'm just over the moon really."

Town are at home in their next league game to Clevedon Town on Saturday, August 13. Their next match in the FA Cup will see them make their shortest away trip of the season to Helston Athletic's Kellaway Park on Saturday, August 20.
