A SPECIALIST Falmouth beer shop that applied to become a Euro style cafe bar has closed its doors for good saying trade in 2022 has been "just awful" and blaming the cost of living crisis.

A notice on the door of the Green Elephant Beer Cellar Bar on Market Strand, Falmouth said the shop was now closed and the premises was up for rent.

The notice says: "The Green Elephant Beer Cellar Bar is now closed. Thanks for your support." It says the shop is now up for let.

The bottle shop in Falmouth specialises in hard to get beers from all over the world, but primarily championed small local breweries. Dom Lilly announced back in July that it was going to have to close because of a really difficult year.

The shop was a new venture for the Red Elephant Elephant Beer Seller Ltd based in Truro. The shop in Truro remains open.

In June they applied to vary the licence for its Green Elephant Beer Cellar and Tasting Room shop at 2 Market Strand to include on sales Monday to Sunday 10am to 10pm.

The aim was to introduce a Euro style cafe bar by varying the licence to include on-sales.

But the following month Mr Lily announced on Facebook that he had made the decision to close Green Elephant for good saying that after a really positive 2021, trade this year had been "awful."

"After a really positive 2021, trade this year has been just awful and attempting to keep going is just no longer viable," he said. "The hope was that adding the 'on-licence' would help the business get through but the council hit us with a 'you may need change of use' towards the end of our license application period.

"I just don't have the money, time or energy to fight this on top of trying to keep the business afloat in the meantime.

"I feel that small business is really going to get hit hardest in this 'cost of living crisis'."

"It's been a great few years, massive thanks to anyone and everyone who was part of the journey along the way."

The Green Elephant Cellar Bar was launched in Falmouth in December 2020 following a Crowdfunder appeal.

The closure follows hot on the heels on the recent announcement of the closure of the Botanical Atelier shop in Arwenack Street, Falmouth.

The botanical art shop is set to close its doors at the end of this month. It announced its impending closure on its social media page, describing the decision as "truly difficult."
