A YOUNG driver from Cornwall has been sentenced by magistrates after committing a driving offence while in possession of drugs.

Charlie Maurice Bishop, aged 22, of Moorland Road in St Austell appeared in front of magistrates at Bodmin Magistrates' Court on Thursday, July 21 on one count of driving whilst disqualified and one count of possession of a controlled drug of Class B, namely cannabis or cannabis resin

The offence occurred on Thursday March 24, 2022 in Callington in Cornwall where Bishop was found to have driven a motor vehicle, a silver Peugeot 206, on Lower Coronation Road in Callington whilst disqualified from holding or obtaining a license.

He was also found to be in possession of 3.83 grams of cannabis or cannabis resin.

Bishop pleaded guilty to both offences.

During his sentencing, Bishop was given a discretionary disqualification in which he was disqualified for holding or obtaining a driving licence for 25 months and his driving record endorsed.

He was also made the subject of a community order in which he must take part in a rehabilitation a activity for up to a maximum of 20 days.

Bishop was also carry out 150 hours of supervised unpaid work within the next 12 months and was also made to pay a surcharge to fund victim services of £95 as well as pay costs of £85 to the Crown Prosecution Service.

The court noted how Bishop's guilty pleas had been taken into account when imposing the sentence and that the 3.83 grams of cannabis would be forfeited under section 27 of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 and destroyed.
