Helston Athletic progressed to the preliminary round of the FA Cup with a 2-1 win over fellow Western League side Street on Saturday.

Rubin Wilson put Helston in the lead midway through the first half after rounding the keeper and firing into the open net before Rikki Shepherd doubled the advantage within seconds of the second half restart.

It was a nervy end for Athletic as Street halved the deficit in second half stoppage time but Helston held on to secure Matt Cusack's first competitive win in charge of the club.

Speaking to the Packet after the game Cusack said: "It was a long day, the boys who left Helston left at 8:30am with various pickups on the way to get everybody. The lads arrived in good spirits.

"It was a baking hot day for both sides the pitch, as they all are at the minute it was dry and bumpy, not the easiest of surfaces but I felt we equipped ourselves well on the day.

"We managed to score first through Tyler Elliot forcing their base midfielder into a mistake which led to the ball falling to Rubin Wilson who rounded the keeper and slot it in to open his account for the club which is always great for the strikers.

"We said at half time to try and keep a clean sheet. If we do that at 1-0 up we are into the next round but also to try and take the game away from them.

"We did that in the 46th minute with good combination play from Tyler Elliot who set up Rikki Shepherd who showed good composure with a side control and then poked the ball past the keeper. He then opened his account as well which is great."

Both of the strikers were new additions to Helston this season. Wilson joined on the eve of their league beginning while Shepherd, formerly of Millbrook, has spent much of the pre-season at Kellaway Park and Cusack anticipates big things for his front two this campaign: "We had both strikers scoring, they caused problems for the Street defence all day. They are going to be a good partnership I can sense that.

"They are going to go from strength to strength. It was a good team performance this week, whereas a week before I called a number of them out to win their one v one duals. We can safely say that a number of them did that and achieved that."

The win means that Helston will be able to look forward to a home tie in the tournament for the first time in the history of their men's side.

It will see Athletic go up against neighbours Falmouth Town which will be the first of three matches between the sides in a matter of weeks.

Helston's Cusack and Falmouth's Andrew Westgarth are good friends off the pitch and Cusack admitted he had great respect for his opposite number: "We've not done that (played each other as managers) for a while, we have both been winners in those games but we have lost as well in terms of a head to head record.

"We had a couple finals a few years back where we won one and they won one etc. We get on great, on the day for those 90 minutes we will be doing our best to make our teams win.

"I have huge respect for him and what he has done, we'll have a beer either way. It is Falmouth, we want to win every game it doesn't matter who its again and that's the mindset I want to try and get into the players.

"I don't want them showing extra effort because it's Falmouth I want that effort in every game. I think if we can get that consistency it can lead to the outcome that is celebrated."

That fixture is scheduled for Saturday, August 20 at Kellaway Park.

Helston's next game is at home to Wellington in the league this Saturday, August 13.
