A retired Royal Navy helicopter ended up somewhere different from where it should be this afternoon, causing traffic chaos.

More usually spotted in the air, this one ended up on the land – blocking a road near Cury Cross Lanes, close to Bochym.

It is understood that the helicopter was being moved from Predannack on the back of a long transporter, with an escort vehicle in front.

Conversely to some reports, locals said the main body of the helicopter didn't fall off, but the landing gear covers sticking out either side were knocked off.

Alison Holt, who took the picture of the helicopter, said: "Our builders helped secure them back into the lorry.

"They did take down a couple of walls, though stopped to rebuild them."

The incident caused traffic chaos for many this afternoon, with drivers having to find alternative routes and finding themselves stuck in queues.

One frustrated driver said: "Sat in traffic for 20 minutes, went Goonhilly [way]," while another wrote "Could they not move it later at night when there is much less traffic on the road? It is august the busiest time of the year."

Another person simply described it as "manic."

The helicopter has now been moved and was seen travelling through Trevenen, later on this afternoon.

It is understood that it is being transported out of Cornwall, most recently spotted in a layby on the A30 at Carland Cross.
