A fire that burned through a Truro park at the weekend is reported to have reignited this evening.

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said crews were back at Boscawen Park and Malpas Road, where more than 40 firefighters from across Cornwall previously faced "extreme heat" as they battled a wildfire that broke out on Saturday.

This was eventually brought under control, but crews have been returning to check for hotspots and this evening the fire service said crews were back working in an area of woodland.

Just after 6pm today (Tuesday) the fire service put out a tweet to say: "We are currently in attendance at Boscawen Park/Malpas Road in Truro.

"Crews are working in the woodland area so may not be visible from the main road."

The fire service said it received 36 emergency 999 calls on Saturday when fire broke out at the park.

The calls began at 11.18am on Saturday morning and continued through the day, as the fire spread from the dry grass to involve nearby trees.

At its height there were seven appliances, one water carrier, two officers, an Incident Command Unit and a light vehicle on scene, with the total number of crew members in attendance exceeding 40.

The fire service first tweeted the news at 12.09pm on Saturday afternoon to say: "We are aware of a grass fire in the area of Boscawen Park, Malpas, Truro. One appliance is in attendance with another two appliances and an officer en route."

However, it was quickly realised that this was going to be a much bigger job and back up was called for.

A following update from the service's newsdesk at the time said: "Critical Control began receiving 999 calls at 11.18am informing them of a wild fire in the area of Boscawen Park, Truro. One appliance from Truro was immediately mobilised.

"The crew on scene have requested assistance from a further two appliances and an officer, which are on their way to the incident from Tolvaddon. In total, 22 calls have currently been received to this incident."

A further update from the Fire and Rescue Service at 1.32pm said: "Over 35 calls have now been received to this incident and there currently six appliances, two officers and one light vehicle in attendance."

And at 3pm that figure was raised to seven appliances, a second fire officer and the Incident Command Unit.

The update read: "Cornwall Fire and Rescue remain on scene at this incident.

"This is a wildfire involving pine trees, grass fire and mixed high and low vegetation.

"Crews are working under extreme heat and uneven surfaces to contain and extinguish the fire. Hose reel jets and beaters are in use."

At 4pm relief crews from St Keverne, Perranporth, Newquay and Padstow had arrived to take over from the crews who were first on the scene and had been battling the flames all day.

The incident was finally brought under control and scaled back by 1am on Sunday, when a pumping application from Falmouth and a light 4x4 appliance from Lostwithiel remained on scene overnight, monitoring and damping down hotspots.

Crews were said to still be making regular visits to the scene on Monday and today, to re-inspect for any further hot spots.
