A seafood restaurant has apologised after a "small" fire in its storeroom forced it to close for the day.

Firefighters were called to the Mermaid Seafood Restaurant in Back Road East, St Ives at 45 minutes past midnight last night.

Six pumps were called to the fire on August 11 after Critical Control received several calls to smoke within a property.

Two fire appliances from St Ives, one from Hayle and one from Penzance Community Fire Station along with the Aerial Ladder Platform from Truro and two whole time officers were mobilised to the incident.

On arrival an assistance message was issued calling to make it six pumps and further appliances and support vehicles were sent from Tolvaddon, Wadebridge and St Just.

A fire was found in a ground floor garage and firefighters wearing six breathing apparatus and using a hosereel jet, a covering jet and safety jet extinguished the fire.

Posting on its Facebook page the restaurant apologised to customers and thanked the fire service for its prompt action saying it could have been much worse.

"Really sorry to say but the Mermaid will be closed today and tonight due to a small fire in our store room area, last evening.

"THANKFULLY no one was harmed due to this incident, we will do our very best to contact all our guests who have booked with us for tonight.

Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience this may cause. Also a massive Mermaid thank you to Cornwall and St Ives fire brigade for there swift and prompt actions to stopping the fire being so much worse.
