An appeal has gone out for businesses and organisations in Falmouth to put themselves forward as collection points for this year's Poppy Day Appeal.

The appeal has been made by former Falmouth mayor Grenville Chappel and partner June who have just been appointed the new Poppy Appeal co-ordinators for Falmouth.

Mr Chappel, who was appointed mayor in 2016, said last year there was no co-ordinator and only Sainsbury's was doing collections.

"We haven't had anyone co-ordinating the Poppy Appeal and last year there were no other poppy boxes in Falmouth. So this year we are trying to get clubs, pubs, hotels, work places to take a collection box."

The poppy appeal starts on October 27 with the Remembrance Day this year taking place on Sunday, November 13.

Many people may not be aware that the legion's support of military personnel and their dependants begins after only seven days of service, continuing throughout their life, long after service is over.

Wearing a poppy is a show of support for the service and sacrifice of our Armed Forces, veterans and their families. It represents all those who lost their lives on active service in all conflicts; from the beginning of the First World War right up to present day.

Anyone who wants to take a collection box can contact Grenville on 07799 143588 or email him at grenville.g@hotmail.co.uk
