Boardmasters Festival 2022 kicked off yesterday and The Packet was there to bring you all of the best bits from day one.
George Ezra took to the main stage for Friday’s headline set and drew the biggest audience of the day performing a setlist packed full of crowd pleasers and his most popular hits, including ‘Green Green Grass’, ‘Paradise’, ‘Shotgun’, ‘Hold My Girl’ and ‘Budapest’, with festival goers singing along all the way.
Earlier in the day, the main stage was opened by Everyone You Know, the London two-piece who had crowds on their feet from the very start.
The energy continued through the day, as Dreya Mac, Cassia, Enny, Freya Riding and The Lathums took to the stage.
Damian "Jr Gong" Marley, youngest son of the legendary Bob Marley delivered nothing short of a reggae masterclass when he took to the stage at just gone half seven in the evening.
With hits including 'Welcome To Jam Rock' as well as several tributes to his late father such as 'Is This Love' and 'Get Up, Stand Up,' Marley put on a sensational performance that had the crowd going all the way through.
Land of Saints played host to acts including The Velvet Hands, Steam Down, and Moonchild Sanelly. Next up, Self Esteem certainly prioritised pleasure as she hit the stage to droves of adoring fans.
Last but by no means least, Friday’s Land of Saints headliners IDLES cemented themselves as crowd-surfing, head banging, rock royalty with a ferocious sonic assault of a set.
The post-punk act built up the crowd by opening with the brooding behemoth of a record 'Colossus' before diving straight into a set of both old and new songs including 'Mr Motivator', 'Grounds', 'Divide and Conquer', '1049 Gotho' and feminist anthem 'Mother.'
At Fistral Beach, the Boardmasters OPEN surf competition continued for a third day with exhilarating battles taking place on the waves.
Once again, the best pro surfers in the world went head-to-head in the UK’s biggest surf competition.
The LQS1000 BFGoodrich Longboard Pro men’s division saw Spain’s Nicolás Andrade take the top spot, with the women’s division seeing France’s own Alice Lemoigne pip her competitors to the post to claim the no.1 place on the podium.
The QS1000 Animal Pro men’s division resulted in a win for French international pro Thomas Ledee following a fiercly fought battle on the waves, with the women’s division delivering an epic final where Portugal’s Yolanda Hopkins saw no.1 success.
