A foreign holidaymaker fell foul of UK driving laws and an over-packed car was found with four children in the back and an adult in the boot in a busy day for police in Cornwall.

These were just two incidents dealt with by members of the Devon and Cornwall Police 'No Excuses' road safety team on Saturday.

One of their stops was in Newquay, when a foreign holidaymaker driving in Cornwall broke one of the UK's laws that was increased in severity in March this year.

An officer from the team said: "Holidaymaker from abroad stopped using a mobile phone while driving in Newquay – immediate £200 payment made at the roadside."

In March the law was extended so that drivers can no longer touch their mobile phone at all while driving. Previously it was against the law to make a call or send messages, but now it also prohibits scrolling through playlists, taking photos and videos, or setting navigation with the engine running.

On the same day, the road safety team stopped a car on the A30 at Innis Downs, which proved to be particularly overcrowded.

The team said: "Car stopped on the A30 Innis Downs as there were four children sat on the rear three seats and one adult in the boot, not to mention the obvious issues with the trailer.

"Driver reported and can expect points and a fine. Adult passenger reported and will also be hearing from us."

Other stops included a vehicle seen driving at excess speed near Newquay, which was then followed by the driver giving false details and having no insurance and positive saliva test, with the passenger dealt with for drug possession.

Officers from the No Excuses team are dedicated to reducing and preventing driving offences – in particular the 'Fatal Five': Inappropriate or excessive speed, not wearing a seat belt, driver distractions (including using mobile devices such as phones, sat navs and tablets), driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and careless or inconsiderate driving.
