Cornwall Fire and Rescue crews wer called out to a suspected arson attack last night at a sports stand in West Cornwall.

The fire, which took place on a sports stand on Alexandra Road in Penzance, near the grounds of Penzance and Newlyn Rugby Football Club at around 8:50pm last night (Aug 23) was suspected to have been started from a small amount of rubbish, mainly newspapers and magazines.

There was no damage recorded at the site.

Two appliances from Penzance Community Fire Station used one hosereel to extinguish the fire which is currently suspected of being a case of arson.

The fire service has informed Devon and Cornwall Police of the incident.

A spokesperson for Cornwall Fire and Rescue service said: "Two fire appliances from Penzance Community Fire Station attended reports of a fire in a sports stand.

"Firefighters used one hosereel to extinguish a small amount of rubbish.

"Arson is suspected and Devon & Cornwall Police have been informed."

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: "Police were called to a small fire within the stands at Penzance and Newlyn Rugby Football Club in Penzance around 8.50pm on Tuesday 23 May.

"Fire service were already on scene.

"It was believed that the fire had been started within a pile of newspapers and magazines.

"No damage caused.

"Police are carrying out enquiries regarding the incident.

"Anyone who witnessed anything suspicious in and around the ground at the time of the fire is asked to contact police via 101, quoting log number 917 of 23 August."
