The first in what is hoped will be a new series of children's books is being sold in support of a charity in Helston.

September 12 is National Blackberry Day and it also marks the launch date for a new book named "Blackberries Aren't that Scary!" by authors Jane Thomas and Mary Framptom-Price, who is originally from America, but now lives in East Cornwall.

The authors have collaborated to produce a children's book in support of Helston-based charity, Racehorse Relief.

The story is based on the true story of a rescued Dartmoor pony, along with her sisters and a thoroughbred ex-racehorse.

It is the first in the 'Stories from a Cornish Stable' series and carries its young readers from racetracks to meadows.

The books are to help children to understand that horses are sentient beings with needs not unlike our own.

Jane joked that she has "spent decades travelling the world and poking her nose into other people’s lives", so it’s perhaps unsurprising that her books are about adventures in obscure places with an intention to reveal hidden truths.

Oxford-educated, she sees research as a sport and writing as an opportunity to share her discoveries.

Mary began riding at the age of five and has never been far from a horse since. She moved to Cornwall with her husband and replaced showjumping and cross-country gallops for gentle hacks across Cornish lanes.

From the sales, £1 from every book will be donated to Racehorse Relief. To find out more visit www.thecornishstories.co.uk
