Helston Athletic's manager Matt Cusack was 'ecstatic' after his side progressed to the Second Qualifying Round of the FA Cup with a 2-1 win over Torpoint Athletic.

A long range stunner from Tom Payne followed by a composed finish from the returning Rikki Shepherd earned passageway for the blues, while Torpoint halved the deficit thanks to a header in the last minute of first half stoppage time from Curtis Damerell. You can read the full match report here.

Speaking to the Packet after the game the manager said: "(I'm)Ecstatic, today was all about getting the victory. It wasn't about a performance necessarily, that would've been nice. I said to the boys 'if we can't perform well on the day just make sure that we do enough and we find a way to win the game' and we've done that.

"I thought we were great from about 10 minutes until minute 35 which doesn't seem a great deal. But during that period we scored twice, we gifted them an opportunity, a lifeline if you will just before half time where I felt we could have taken the game away from them had we gone in at 2-0.

"I felt we could have taken the game away from them in the second half. We battled second half, they put us under a bit of pressure, we hit the bar with Rubes (Rubin Wilson) if that had gone in I think that would have been the tie won there and then. 2-1 is always a dodgy score, there was a bit of animosity at the end that you get in a cup tie. But yeah delighted to be standing here victorious and in the hat for the next round."

Helston are now the only side from Cornwall left in the prestigious competition after Truro City were dumped out 5-2 by Merthyr Tydfil in Wales and now Cusack has his eyes set on a side they don't know too much about in the next round. He said: "We don't mind, preferably somebody that maybe we are not too familiar with.

"That would be nice. We have played teams so far that are either our league, Street, Falmouth and now Torpoint. That won't happen this time around, we're delighted to be flying the flag for Cornwall but we don't mind who we play really but we are certainly looking forward to the draw."

The draw for the Second Qualifying Round of the FA Cup is at 1pm on Monday, September 5.
