Three friends who have been there for each other through life's ups and downs have now faced one of their biggest challenges together – a ten-hour hike covering 26 miles across Cornwall.

Lucy Thomas, Annie Headon and Jenni Ferguson took part in Cornwall's Macmillan Mighty Hike on Saturday, raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Starting in Padstow and ending in Newquay, they were walking in memory of Lucy's mum Maggie, who passed away from cancer in April this year.

Speaking about the reason for the challenge beforehand, Lucy said: "We're doing this in honour of my amazing mum. Everything moved far too quickly for us to use Macmillan, but they are a brilliant charity and provide so much support for those affected by cancer."

She described her mum as "the most sensational human being", adding that Maggie had a saying when things got tough: "Onwards and upwards."

It was a phrase that no doubt rang true for the trio on Saturday, as they battled the hilly Cornish coastline in less than favourable conditions.

After one of the driest summers on record, the day of the hike dawned grey and rainy.

Lucy said: "Ten hours from start to finish, the majority of it in howling wind and rain – thanks Cornwall."

However, she said the donations the three had received meant "so much" to all of them, and made all 65,800 steps worth it.

Their fundraising page is still open online at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/oldfriendsgohiking where after an initial aim to raise £750 between them, they are currently at more than £1,600.

Lucy, who grew up at Lowertown near Helston, Annie, originally from Coverack, and Jenni, from Gorran Haven, met while at school more than 20 years ago and their friendship has lasted the decades.
