A woman sustained serious injuries and was subsequently airlifted to hospital following a car crash near Playing Place on Friday afternoon.

The incident, shortly after 4pm, involved a car hitting a tree off the embankment on the A39 leaving two people trapped as a result.

The collision left a man and woman trapped in the car and had to be freed by the Cornwall Fire Service.

The woman suffered serious injuries and was consequently airlifted to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, while the man suffered minor injuries.

A child was also in the car and was taken to Royal Cornwall Hospital with injuries believed to be minor. 

Police were called to a single-car collision on the A39 at Playing Place, Truro, at 4pm on Friday 2 September.

A full statement from Devon and Cornwall Police said: "Police were called to a single-car collision on the A39 at Playing Place, Truro, at 4pm on Friday 2 September.

"The car left the road and was in collision with a tree.

"A man and a woman were trapped in the vehicle and were extracted by the fire service.

"Ambulance and the air ambulance also attended.

"The woman sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to Derriford Hospital.

"The man suffered minor injuries.

"A child (boy) was also injured and taken to Treliske Hospital. Injuries not believed serious.

"The road was closed in both directions and fully reopened at 7.20pm."
