Prince Charles and Prince William will be given new titles following the death of the Queen at the age of 96.

A tweet from the Royal Family at 6.30pm on Thursday stated: "The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow."

Broadcaster Huw Edwards delivered the news of the Queen’s death live on BBC One.

After an image of the flag at Buckingham Palace was shown at half mast, he told viewers: “A few moments ago Buckingham Palace announced the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.”

Tribute to the Queen

Prince Charles will now have the title of King Charles III, which is something he chose himself.

Meanwhile, Sky News has reported that William and Kate's Twitter account @KensingtonRoyal now refers to the couple as The Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and Cambridge.

Previously Prince Charles and his wife Camilla held the title for Cornwall, recently visiting the Royal Cornwall Show back in June to mark his 70th anniversary as Duke of Cornwall.

Prince William will now inherit the Duchy of Cornwall, which Charles has always been closely involved in.

What did Charles say about the Queen's passing?

Following the announcement His Majesty The King said: “The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family.

“We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved Mother.

“I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world.

“During this period of mourning and change, my family and I will be comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which The Queen was so widely held.”
