After the announcement of the death of Queen Elizabeth II last night, tributes from local leaders in Cornwall have been pouring in.

Local leaders across Cornwall have published their messages of condolences to the Royal Family and to the new King Charles III.

Cherilyn Mackrory, MP for Truro and Falmouth who said: "Our Queen, Elizabeth II has sadly died.

"My thoughts with her family at this difficult time.

"Thank you Ma'am for your lifetime of devoted service to our country."

 

Steve Double, MP for St Austell and Newquay said: "I am deeply saddened to hear of the death of Her Majesty the Queen.

"My thoughts and prayers are with her family at this time.

"We will now observe a period of national mourning to show our respects and honour her life of service to our country."

 

Scott Mann, MP for North Cornwall, shared a tribute saying: "There are no words that can express the profound loss this country feels with the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.

"She has been a huge figure in all our lives during seventy years of dedicated service.

"My deepest condolences to the Royal Family.

"God Save the King."

 

Derek Thomas, MP for St Ives, West Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, said: "It was not so long ago that we said goodbye to Prince Philip but now we find ourselves mourning the passing of Her Majesty the Queen.

"Our longest reigning monarch, she has been on the throne since before most of us were born, inspiring us all with her sense of duty, her humility and extraordinary strength of character.

"Our country - and her fourteen other Commonwealth realms - has changed so much in those 70 years, but she has remained the same, a constant presence, admired and respected, through years of change.

"This is the end of an era which will be keenly felt across our great nation.

"My thoughts and prayers go to the royal family, for their loss and as they lead us in our mourning.

"God save the King."

 

Sheryll Murray, MP for South East Cornwall replied directly to a tweet sent out by the Royal Family saying: "My sincere condolences on your loss.

"Her Majesty the Queen put our Country before herself for over 70 years and I feel your loss.

"God Save The King."

 

George Eustice MP said:"The death of Her Majesty the Queen is a moment of great sorrow for our country. 

"During her seventy years as monarch, she gave enormous service and commitment to the nation, fulfilling a pledge she made when just 21. 

"She was a constant presence in our national life as so much else changed and she was revered around the world. 

"My thoughts and prayers are with His Majesty the King, His Royal Highness Prince William, who now becomes the Duke of Cornwall, and the whole wider Royal Family."

Cornwall Council said: "We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Her Majesty The Queen.

"We offer the heartfelt condolences of Cornwall to the Royal Family."

Councillor Pauline Giles BEM, Chairman of Cornwall Council said: "It was with great sadness that we have today learned of the death of Her Majesty The Queen.

"She was truly remarkable, much loved and respected.

"Throughout her long reign she provided a sense of continuity, stability and leadership during times of enormous social change and will be greatly missed by both the Royal Family and the whole nation.

"Others have paid tribute to her devotion to duty and her life of public service and I would like to join with these tributes.

"She touched the lives of so many people of all generations and her death marks the end of an era in the life of our country.

"The Queen was much loved by all in Cornwall, many of whom have fond memories of her many visits to the Duchy.

"I will convey our deepest sympathies and condolences to the Royal Family on their, and the nation’s great loss."

Conservative Group Leader Linda Taylor CC said: "The loss of our Queen, Elizabeth II, is one that is felt in Cornwall, Great Britain, the Commonwealth and around the world.

"Our Queen although small in stature, was a global colossus by reputation, a bright beacon among heads of state internationally, offering a lifetime of service to her grateful nation.

"Her reign as monarch of our United Kingdom was unprecedented in length and she provided the continuity and stability on which our nation rested and grew, through the decades.

"Our thoughts are with the Royal Family at this sad moment, as we take time over the forthcoming period of national mourning to reflect back on our Queen’s lifetime of service, and her legacy to us all.

"God save the King."

Steven Webb, Mayor of Truro, said: "It was with great sadness that we have today learned of the death of Her Majesty the Queen.

"Throughout her life she served our country with remarkable commitment and dedication, whilst leading us through times of enormous social change."

 

Falmouth mayor Steve Eva paid tribute to the Queen on behalf of the town council saying: "So sad to hear the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

"She had ruled our country and Commonwealth for 70years with grace and loyalty.

"Falmouth sends their sympathy to her family at this sad time.

"God Save The Queen."

St Ives Mayor Kirsty Arthur said: "On behalf of St Ives Council, I wish to express my extreme sadness at the announcement of the death of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth the II.

"We pay tribute to her matchless record of tireless public service and custodianship of our nations over so many decades.

"Official flags will be flown at half-mast today, Thursday 8th September at St Ives Guildhall and the Malakoff until the day after the funeral, the date for which has yet to be confirmed.

"As a further mark of respect and in line with national mourning, there will no illuminations of our public buildings in the town.

"Further statements will be issued as formal arrangements are confirmed in the coming days."

 

Jonathan How, Mayor of Penzance, has said council meetings will be postponed and books of condolence will be placed around the town and surrounding villages.

He said: "People of Penzance, Newlyn, Mousehole, Paul, Heamoor, and Gulval.

"It is with great sadness that I, the mayor of Penzance, announce to you today the death of HM Queen Elizabeth II.

"All Penzance Council meetings and engagements have been postponed with immediate effect. Normal council services will be reduced as Officers and Councillors follow national protocols.

"The Union Flag has been lowered to half-mast at the forecourt of St John’s Hall, the town's municipal building, as a sign of respect at her passing.

"Condolence Books will be opened in each ward of the Penzance Parish for members of the public to pay their respects.

"These books are a local record and will form part of Penzance Council’s archive.

"More information about the planned events for the coming days will be announced shortly."

Jayne Kirkham, on behalf of the Cornwall Council Labour Group, said: "It is with great sadness that we learnt of the passing of Her Majesty The Queen.

"She was without doubt a one-off.

"Her selfless dedication to her role was incredible - she was always on duty.

"Her country came first before everything else and our country is much the poorer due to her passing.

"Her example of duty and service is a lesson to us all as we move into life without her."

Helston Town Council said: "It is with deep sadness that Helston Town Council heard the announcement today, September 8 2022, from Buckingham Palace that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has passed away.

"The Council wishes to express its sincere condolences to the members of the Royal family at this very difficult time.

"The Queen was a very well respected and thought after member of the Royal family and will be greatly missed."

Penzance Town Council said: "It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our Sovereign, Queen Elizabeth II

"Further announcements will be made in due course."

 

Camborne Town Council said: "Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has sadly passed away peacefully this afternoon.

"Our deepest condolences go to His Majesty the King and the Royal Family."

Redruth Town Council said: "Redruth Town Council, Councillors and Officers are deeply saddened to hear of the death of Her Majesty the Queen after a lifetime of extraordinary service to the country.

"We send our condolences to the Royal Family."

The Mayor and Chair of Bodmin Town Council said: "We are deeply saddened to learn about the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

"On this sad occasion, the Mayor, Vice Mayor, Councillors, staff of Bodmin Town Council and on behalf of the community would like to express their deepest condolences to all members of the Royal Family."

Porthleven Town Council said: "In the year of her extraordinary platinum jubilee we wish a sorrowful farewell to our reigning monarch Queen Elizabeth II. Porthleven Mayor, Deputy and all councillors offer condolences to the royal family at this saddest of times."

Newquay Town Council said: "It is with deep sorrow we announce our beloved Royal Majesty The Queen Elizabeth II has passed away peacefully at Balmoral Castle.

"Further announcements will be made in due course."

Alison Hernandez, the Police and crime Commissioner for Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly has paid tribute by saying: "My generation has grown up in the age of Elizabeth II and it is difficult to imagine life without her.

"In this country’s most difficult times she has remained a steadfast, resolute and calming influence.

"Her selflessness and sense of duty - including her tireless state work throughout the Covid-19 pandemic and continuation of her duties despite recent health challenges - have been an inspiration to me and countless others in public life.

"Her Majesty the Queen will be remembered with particular affection in Devon and Cornwall, where she made a number of high profile visits, often accompanied by her husband and children.

"My heartfelt condolences go to all members of the royal family at this time.

"I will be working with the Temporary Chief Constable to ensure that Devon and Cornwall Police continue to support our communities during this important time of national mourning."
