Charlie Young came off the bench to grab a hat trick as Wendron United produced a stunning second half performance to defeat Godolphin Atlantic at Underlane.

The sides had gone in level at the interval after Joe Souch's textbook header was matched by Matt Sanders' effort at the other end.

But after the break Wendron showed their ruthless edge with Ryan Reeve scoring twice, and Young scoring thrice to complete the scoring while Jack Stocker was denied from the penalty spot.

In a battle of sixth vs seventh there were some notable absentees from Wendron's starting 11 with shot-stopper Ethan Fearn and captain Scott Palmer both ruled out with Covid.

The hosts began the encounter on the front foot and could have been in front inside the first three minutes of the match. Ryan Reeve was expertly set away in behind by TJ Walter, but saw his low effort well saved by his former Penryn teammate Adam Robathon.

Reeve had another opportunity just shy of the 15 minute mark but could only send a header wide of the mark from a corner.

In what wasn't the most thrilling of matches at that point the home side were dominating the ball without ever really threatening their north coast opposition although that came to and end with 30 minutes on the clock.

Reece Carroll found himself in space on the left and delivered an inch perfect cross onto the head of Joe Souch who did brilliantly to guide the header into the far corner to give Dron the upper hand.

Carroll nearly turned from provider to scorer two minutes later from after a corner came out to him, but he could only curl an attempt wide left of the far post.

A defensive lapse ended up costing Dron though as Godolphin levelled the play with 38 minutes played. Eli Evans could only see a shot well saved by stand in keeper Daniel Steadman. But Wendron failed to clear the following corner, which after being hoisted back into the area, was flicked into the net by Matt Sanders as the sides went in level at the break.

Godolphin's boss Harry Pope believed his opposition should have a man sent off early in the second period after a blunder from Steadman threatened to let Matty Walker in.

The goalkeeper's heavy touch gifted the ball to the winger who looked set to be in on goal until the keeper hauled him down. However the referee deemed that the covering defence meant the offence was only worthy of a yellow card and the subsequent free kick was curled over the top by Sanders in the 48th minute.

Wendron had a glorious chance to take the lead minutes later when Jacob Cleverly was upended in the box. The decision looked soft but nevertheless the decision was made and Wendron's Jack Stocker took up the duties.

However Godolphin's Robathan was in no mood to be beaten from the spot, getting down low to his right hand side to palm the ball away from danger in the 52nd minute.

But four minutes later they were back in front through Ryan Reeve. The ever-energetic Josh Wood got to the byline and set the ball back across the box to Reeve who made no mistake knocking the ball into the vacant net to restore their advantage.

Brothers Sam and Charlie Young were introduced for Jacob Cleverly and Walter and it was the latter who extended Dron's lead with 73 minutes on the clock. Carroll's crossing ability paid off again as his corner located the striker virtually on the goalline to nod in.

Godolphin should have levelled in the 76th minute but could only flick a free header from a set piece wide of the mark.

Then followed a superb team goal from Wendron as they added a fourth in style. Numerous home shirts were involved in the move as Wood outmuscled his man before sliding in Lucas Potts.

The box-to-box midfielder then had the composure to pick out Young in a crowded box. The forward steadied himself with an exquisite first touch before guiding the ball in at the near post to make it 4-1 on 78 minutes.

Four then became five in the 86th minute as Young completed his second half hat trick. It was the same combination as before with Potts picking out the talisman who once again made no mistake guiding the ball into the bottom corner to collect the match ball.

There was still time for one more goal in stoppage time as the Godolphin goalkeeper could only fumble a slightly overhit pass from Wood. The ball fell perfectly into the path of Reeve who tapped in his second of the match.

The full time whistle was a welcome noise for the visitors who fell apart in the second 45.

Wendron move up to fifth in the table, Godolphin remain seventh. Next up for Wendron is a home match against Newquay on Wednesday, September 21.
