Well over 1,000 motorcyclists attended the 35th anniversary Martin Jennings Memorial Run on Sunday.

More than £6,400 was collected from the bikers at the start, plus an extra £1,000 donation from Hawkins Motors.

With more money yet to be counted from collection boxes at the lunch stop and the finish at Falmouth Recreation Ground, along with the sales of special commemorative Jennings Run 2922 stickers and the Just Giving page, it is expected to be a bumper grand total. The Packet will bring you more details on the final total when it is counted.

The run began at Tregurra Park and Ride Car Park, Truro and went as far east as Doublebois near Liskerad, via St Austell, before the huge convoy made its way down the A30 to Beacon, Camborne.

The village was left temporarily gridlocked as speeches and a minute's silence was held in memory of Martin Jennings and other bikers who have lost their lives on the roads of Cornwall and beyond.

Hundreds of spectators lined the route to wave the bikers on as they made their way around Cornwall.

The route continued through Troon to Helston, then on to Falmouth via the main road and through the town to the Recreation Ground, although bypassing the seafront this year due to road closures for the triathlon taking place on the same day.

In attendance at the start were several charities that have benefited from the run over the past 35 years, with approximately £150,000 raised in that time.

This year's run is raising money for Cornwall Hospice Care.

To mark this year being the 35th anniversary of the run, Mr Saunby rode the motorbike he used on the very first run in 1988 – a Triton that he built from parts in 1978/79, using a 1960 Triumph engine and a 1955 Norton Featherbed frame.

The memorial run was set up following the death of Martin Jennings while competing in the 1987 Isle of Man Manx GP.

The ride was started in memory of Martin, from Beacon, Camborne, and has continue him along with other bikers that have lost their lives on the roads of Cornwall, and further afield.

Dave Saunby organiser of the run for the past 35 years, said in his speech at Beacon that he did not know how long he can keep organising the run, with the years creeping up on him, but he hopes that the run will continue, and will be left in safe hands if he is unable to do so.

The charity event was held two weeks later than planned, until after the state funeral of Queen Elizabeth II, as a mark of respect.
