Charley Bodman has agreed a new contract with Cornwall RLFC which will see the Welsh forward remain at the Memorial Ground until the end of 2023.

The 20-year-old joined the Choughs from Hunslet in June and made his debut in the club’s history-making first ever professional triumph against West Wales Raiders.

The 24-4 win was the perfect way for Bodman, against one of his former clubs, to begin his career with rugby league’s newest professional entity.

Newport born, Bodman made 10 appearances in total for Cornwall in 2022 and immediately endeared himself to the Mem faithful for his all-action performances and flamboyant choice of hairstyle.

Reflecting on his decision to be part of Cornwall’s second Betfred League 1 campaign in 2023, Bodman revealed that he needed little persuading to ink terms for next season.

“It was really easy for me to sign for 2023 once I knew the club wanted to have me back,”Bodman told cornwallrlfc.co.uk.

“I loved the time I spent with the club as the team was great and so were the supporters. I know the mullet got me some attention and some said I was an instant cult hero but I didn’t see it like that.

“The main thing for me was that it was completely different to play in front of new fans who have never really watched rugby league before.

“The supporters were always very encouraging and supportive. They didn’t try and tell us how to play the game from the sideline and I found that very refreshing.

“I think we can build on what we achieved last season because as it went on, our performances got better even if the results still went against us. It will be great to have a settled squad for next year because the club have had a lot more time to prepare.

“And for me personally, I know I am still young, want to learn the game more and feel I can do that with Cornwall.”

Meanwhile, Cornwall RLFC general manager John Beach added: “Charley came into the squad last season after spending time at Hunslet where he didn’t get much game time.

“We were able to offer him the chance to play regularly and he took the opportunity with both hands. He is a good person to have around the dressing room and instantly became a very popular member of our squad.

“I am pleased that we have been able to tie Charley down for 2023 and his signature will be the first of many we make over the next couple of weeks.”
