Two people were rescued from a burning house in Falmouth last night before needing medical treatment.

Thankfully they were woken by their working smoke alarm in the early hours of this morning, which meant they were able to call 999.

Fire crews from Falmouth and Tolvaddon were sent to the house fire in Dracaena Avenue just after 1.30am.

They were about to rescue the two people inside quickly and pass them into the care of a waiting ambulance for treatment.

A spokesperson for Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said: "On receipt of this call, the incident was classified as 'person reported'.

"Two appliances from Falmouth and one from Tolvaddon were mobilised. On arrival the crew confirmed that persons were reported and that there was smoke issuing from the property.

"Two persons were quickly rescued from the property by firefighters wearing breathing apparatus. An ambulance, which had already been requested, was confirmed to be required at the scene."

The fire involved a three storey detached house, with the fire on the lower ground floor.

Teams of firefighters wearing breathing equipment tackled the flames with hosereel jets and main jets, using thermal imaging cameras to check for pockets of fire.

Devon and Cornwall Police closed the road while emergency services worked.

An update from the fire service at 3.30am said the fire was by then out and everyone in the house accounted for.

Crews remained on scene at that time.

A fire service spokesperson confirmed that the the cause of the fire was accidental.

They also spoke of the importance of having working smoke alarms, which saved the people inside in this incident, adding: "The occupants were made aware of the fire by a working smoke alarm system in the property."
