A 90 YEAR-OLD man has been airlifted to hospital after a crash on the A30 on Wednesday, October 26 left the road closed for several hours.

Fire services were requested at 12:26pm yesterday (Oct 26) after reports came in of a two-vehicle collision during which one of the vehicles had left the road with the 90-year-old still stuck inside.

Crash rescue equipment was used by appliances from Bodmin and Launceston, alongside a Rescue Tender and Wholetime Station Manager, also from Bodmin, in order to free the trapped casualty.

Rescue crews assisted Cornwall Air Ambulance crews and a Critical Care Doctor before the casualty was airlifted to hospital.

Once this had been done, Cornwall Fire and Rescue service made the scene safe before handing it over to Devon and Cornwall Police.

A 62-year-old man from Blackpool has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and police say he has since been released under investigation pending further enquiries.

Detailed investigations were carried out at the scene by Roads Policing Team and Serious investigation units.

A spokesperson for Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said: "Fire Control were called by Police at 12:26 requesting assistance at a road traffic collision involving two vehicles, one of which had left the carriageway with a person still inside.

"Appliances were mobilised from Bodmin and Launceston along with the Rescue Tender and Wholetime Station Manager also from Bodmin.

"On arrival crews assisted Cornwall Air Ambulance crews and a Critical Care Doctor to safely extricate the casualty using crash rescue equipment.

"The casualty has been taken by air to hospital.

"The scene was made safe and handed over to police."

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: "Police were called just before 12.20pm on Wednesday 26 October following reports of a two-vehicle collision on the A30.

"The incident involved a red Vauxhall Agila and a Renault recovery vehicle which happened on the Eastbound carriageway at Minzies near Bodmin.

"The driver of the Agila, a man in his 90s, was airlifted to hospital with suspected life-threatening injuries.

"Road closures were put in place whilst emergency services attended the scene.

"A 62-year-old man from Blackpool was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and has since been released under investigation pending further enquiries.

"Officers from the Roads Policing Team and Serious investigation units attended the scene and carried out a detailed investigation.

"Police would like to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the collision or have any information which would assist the investigation.
