Helston Women’s Rugby team is celebrating a 17 – 10 victory after defeating league team Bude after a try in the last minute from Zoe Emery writes Kate Lockett.

Helston Woman’s RFC was playing away in Bude on Sunday to a team they have matched against before but unlike matches previous, this time they returned home winners, thanks to tries from Bex Beeves, Makindi Carter, and Zoe Emery.

Manager Paul Du Val told the Packet: “We knew it would be a tough challenge, as Bude is a very strong team.

“We didn’t start particularly well, possibly due to the travelling up there. It started slowly, however, there was a good 12 to 20 minutes of defence on our side.

“We managed to get the try, they came back into it, and it was ten-all for a long period of the game.”

This game was only the third league match the team has played, and although they won there were still quite a lot of challenges, including match stops due to injuries.

Players suffered knee injuries from both sides and at one point there seemed to be quite a few injuries on the pitch at one time, which Paul described as a ‘battlefield’.

But this didn’t affect gameplay and the Helston ladies came out stronger, which was noticed by Paul.

“There was a difference in the team's playing efforts, which saw them more focused and determined.

“It was the most physical game and the most powerful team we have played against so far.”

With pressure on their line, a last-minute try from Zoe Emery took the team into the lead against Bude.

Speaking after the match, Paul said: “It was a good match.

“It has shown the progression from where we started to where we are now.”

The next match in the cup is against Launceston on November 27 at Polson Bridge. Launceston is in the same league as Bude.

The team was set up in 2019 just before the Covid pandemic hit. Eventually, the team picked back up, with training every couple of weeks, leading to weekly training.

The team would like to thank Helston Rugby Club for their support in getting a women’s team up and running and Tom Matanatabu who is the assistant coach, with Paul adding: "Without their help, we would not be where we are in such a short space of time."
