Christmas lights will be lighting up the dark skies in Cornwall over the next few weeks - with towns and villages preparing to welcome the festive season.

Over the next few weeks, Christmas light switch-on events will be taking place throughout Cornwall.

For many towns and villages across the Duchy, the light switch-on events will be the first since 2019 before the Covid pandemic.

However, restrictions have been lifted, and committees across Cornwall are preparing and putting up lights for big switch-on events throughout the next few weeks.

Here is our round-up of locations times and dates for Christmas light events in Cornwall:

TRURO:

Christmas celebrations start with Festive Friday and Truro’s Christmas Light switch-on, which is sponsored by Great Western Railway.

On Friday, November 18 festivities start at 10am with Duchy Fairs Big Festive Shop Small Market on Lemon Quay.

At 3pm, Pirate FM broadcasts with Johnny Cowling and Lucy Start, who will pop up in different locations across Truro.

Between 4.45pm and 7pm there will be on-stage entertainment organised by Hall for Cornwall – on the stage in Boscawen Street.

Lights will be switched on by Johnny Cowling and Lucy Start at 7 pm in Boscawen Street.

FALMOUTH:

On Thursday, November 24 Falmouth will switch on its Christmas lights with events happening throughout the evening.

Starting at 5.45pm the Lantern Parade led by Kernow Pipes and Drums will leave Events Square and make its way through the town.

Over on The Moor, a rock choir will perform festive favourites on stage.

At 6.10pm schools across Falmouth will perform Christmas songs and carols on the stage at the Moor.

The lights will then be switched on at 7pm, followed by a performance on the stage at The Moor by Viva Voce.

HELSTON:

On Friday, November 25 Helston will welcome the return of the Christmas lights switch on.

Starting at 5.30pm Santa will be in his grotto on Meneage Street. It will cost £4 per child to visit Santa in his grotto, which includes a gift from the man himself.

Shops will open slightly later this date, and there will be entertainment throughout the evening from 6pm, with the lights being switched on at 7.30pm.

CAMBORNE:

Camborne Town Council and Camborne BID has announced festive events throughout December, starting on Friday, November 25.

A children's lantern parade will leave Rectory Road at 4.45pm. The parade will visit different locations throughout Camborne. 

Following the lantern parade, the Christmas lights will be switched on at 6.30pm. 

Other events in December include a Christmas Tree Festival at Camborne Parish Church, plus Santa’s Grotto at Camborne Library. To find out more information, visit: CamborneTown.Com

PENZANCE: 

Penzance will celebrate its Christmas Light Switch on, on Saturday, November 26.

From 10.30am until 7pm the Christmas Market will be trading, along with street entertainment and music throughout the day until the switch on at 5pm.

Following the switch on there will be a family-friendly silent disco.

Music students from Humphry Davy and Mounts Bay Schools will be performing on the stage in Greenmarket Car Park during the afternoon where Coast FM will also be broadcasting live.

‘The Bash Street Kids’ will be providing entertainment throughout Penzance, whilst Newquay based 'The Powered Up Crew’ will be getting on their bikes and lighting up the Christmas Trees from 4pm until 6pm.

Vicky – aka The Penzance Angel will be lighting up the streets for the switch on and selfies are welcome.

REDRUTH:

On Saturday, November 26 there will be events throughout the day leading up to the lights being switched on at 5.30pm.

Starting at 11am, there will be a Festive Town Market which will finish at 5pm.

At 1pm, Santa Bus will stop at Alma Place.

Redruth Town Band will perform at Tatey Court followed by Redruth Carol Choir singing in St Rumon’s Gardens at 4.15pm.

At 5.15pm, Carol singing at the Miner Statue with Father Christmas will be followed by the lights being switched on by Chris Hailey of the Redruth Charity Trust and the girls of Redruth Rugby Club.

PORTHLEVEN:

On Friday, December 2 Porthleven will be starting their light switch-on celebrations at 6.30pm with Porthleven Town Band performing. The lights will be switched on at 7pm followed by a visit from Santa soon after.

​On December 3 and 4 there will be a Santa’s Grotto in aid of the lights in the Shipyard Market.

PENRYN: 

Penryn will turn on its Christmas lights on Saturday, December 3 at 6.30pm.

Starting at 6.15pm there will be a light procession from the Memorial Gardens which will proceed to the Methodist Church in the town centre.

Santa and his sleigh will be there during the evening along with Santa’s Grotto in the Town Hall.

Refreshments will also be served in the Temperance Hall along with Christmas Craft Stalls.

ST KEVERNE:

St Keverne will be switching on its Christmas lights on Friday, December 9 from 6.30pm.

On Saturday, December 10 there will be a Christmas fete taking place between 11am and 5pm to celebrate the Christmas lights being switched on. There will be stalls available. Refreshments will be available throughout the day and a surprise visit from Father Christmas.

There will also be a family disco at St Keverne Parish Hall that evening from 7.30pm. 

Tickets will cost £5 per adult, £2 per child (under 16 must be accompanied by an adult), £10 per family (two children and two adults) and £1 per additional child, available on the door. 

COVERACK:

Saturday, December 10 Coverack will welcome the return of its Christmas Tree Night.

The festive event will start at 6.30pm with a lantern procession followed by the Christmas light switch on with carols being sung throughout the evening. 

Father Christmas will also make an appearance. 

Refreshments will be available during the evening. 

On December 22 there will be a Night of Twinkling Lights at Coverack Beach from 7.30pm.
