Football fans in Helston gathered this afternoon to watch England triumph in their first match in this year’s World Cup in Qatar.

Most of the pubs were broadcasting the match on screens, with some of the biggest crowds in the recently reopened Bell Inn, in Meneage Street.

Four screens were showing the match in the pub, with one in the beer garden.

England were victorious in their match against Iran, with goals from Bellingham, Saka (two), Sterling, Rashford, and Grealish.

They will now play against the United States of America on Friday, November 25 at 7pm.

Although the World Cup is a welcome return for many football fans, Qatar, where the games are being held, has been at the centre of controversies over the past few weeks.

Soon after Qatar was awarded the World Cup, questions about the country’s attitudes toward football fans were raised. They also have strict laws against homosexuality and alcohol, which is not freely available.

Qatar World Cup Ambassador Khalid Salman described homosexuality as “damage in the mind” earlier this month and the United States travel advisories have also noted that unaccompanied women who travel to Qatar may potentially be verbally abused or physically harassed.

It was also reported recently in The Guardian that 6,500 migrant workers had died in Qatar since the World Cup was awarded.
