Pasty wars have re-erupted in Cornwall after Greggs announced it would be opening a new bakery on in the Duchy's city high street within weeks.

The bakery chain has announced the new premises in Truro will serve customers for the first time on Tuesday, December 6.

The new store will open in the now boarded up Co-op and Bristol and West building society’s branch in St Nicholas Street

It has long faced a battle to establish a foothold in the 'home of the pasty' and has even been forced to abandon previous efforts over local opposition.

Greggs tried to open its first store in Cornwall in 2019 in Saltash, close to the Devon border - but it closed after just nine months following a lack of trade.

It has since opened two shops in Cornwall which are now tucked away at Penngyllam Industrial Estate on the outskirts of Launceston and Cornwall Services by the A30.

Locals said they never believed they would try and open one in the 'heart of the county.'

But signs of what some described as a "declaration of war" that they were targeting Truro started appearing on a site, a mere stone's throw from Cornish pasty makers Rowe’s and Warrens - prompting further outrage.

One resident described it as "the Devil's spawn" and another saying that any new stores that try to open in Cornwall "won't last".

Locals have reacted with fury to the latest development.

One said: "Never have my custom when there is proper pasty shops down the road."

Another said: "Enjoy the Greggs, I hope it makes you very happy. Dear lord, what a sad little life."

One pasty fan simply said: "So that's gonna flop."

Another added: "''This is the first major battle in full on war. It is an invasion on our capital.''

A Greggs spokeswoman said: "We can confirm we are due to open a new shop in Truro later this year.

"We will be sure to share further information in due course."
