Redruth Christmas Lights Switch On will still take place this evening - but with changes to the schedule due heavy rain coming in later.

Yellow weather warnings for rain are in place for Cornwall today and tomorrow, from St Austell up, and while further west is not expected to get the full force of the rain it will still be pretty wet.

Heavy downpours are forecast in Redruth from 12 noon, continuing all through the afternoon and evening until 9pm, when it will be lighter rain, according to the Met Office.

As a result, organisers of the town's lights switch on event have changed the programme for this evening (Saturday) with some elements due to take place at a later time.

This includes the Lantern Display, which is unlikely to withstand heavy rain, and instead the creations will be on show at a community event at Kresen Kernow on December 10.

For those not keen to head out in the rain, the lights switch on will be live streamed and a video is also being made.

The Discover Redruth team has listed the full schedule for this evening, with changes to some locations and plans.

It said: "Due to the predicted weather forecast, of strong winds and heavy rain, we are having to make some changes to the light switch on event.

"The Lantern Display will be postponed - we are inviting all community members who were taking part to join us for the Cornish Yule Tide Afternoon at Kresen Kernow on 10th December, 1pm until 3pm.

"The Christmas lights will still be switched at 5.30pm to mark the beginning of the festive season.

"As we know many will not want to be out in the bad weather, this will be live streamed and we will be creating a film to go on the website and social media - we ask everyone to share the video far and wide so we can reach as many people as possible!

"The 'switch on' will be taking place in the foyer of Redruth Library, so unfortunately we will not have space for people to gather.

"The festive market will still be taking place (11am until 5pm) but all traders will be moved indoors including Market Hall and The Buttermarket.

"The Wassail and Mummers play is still taking place, but will be moved in to The Buttermarket/Market Hall before they begin the procession. They will begin from 4pm.

"Redruth Carol Choir will be singing the traditional Cornish carols alongside the Wassail, also from 4pm in The Buttermarket/Market Hall."

Festive Saturdays are also taking place throughout December. Visit https://discoverredruth.co.uk/christmas-in-redruth/ for more details.
