The day that every true Cornish native dreaded is here - Greggs Bakery is opening it's brand new store tomorrow - in Cornwall.

Greggs announced it would be opening a new bakery in Truro's St Nicholas Street earlier this year.

The shop in the former Co-op and Bristol and West building society’s branch opens its doors to its first customer tomorrow Tuesday, December 6.

Truro Bid has welcomed the opening, posting on Facebook: "Looking forward to you opening in Truro tomorrow Greggs - located in St. Nicholas Street! Great to have St. Nicholas Street full."

But the baker has an uphill struggle to convince the Cornish its pasties are as good as the real thing, after already being forced out of one Cornish town on the county's borders after local opposition.

Greggs tried to open its first store in Cornwall in 2019 in Saltash, close to the Devon border - but it closed after just nine months following a lack of trade.

It has since opened two shops in Cornwall which are now tucked away at Penngyllam Industrial Estate on the outskirts of Launceston and Cornwall Services by the A30.

But locals said they never believed they would try and open one in the 'heart of the county.'

When the news was announced one resident described it as "the Devil's spawn" and another saying that any new stores that try to open in Cornwall "won't last".

Another added: "'This is the first major battle in full on war. It is an invasion of our capital.''

That remains to be seen though, will the people of Truro welcome the new Greggs or will they consider it a declaration of war? The outcome remains to be seen.
