Cornwall's rank as compared to the rest of the UK based on how income-deprived the local authority is has been released.

The data, The Indices of Deprivation 2019, has been produced by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG).

According to data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), Cornwall ranks as the 108th most income-deprived out of 316 local authorities.

The ONS looked at levels of income deprivation, which is based on the proportion of people in an area who are out of work or on low earnings.

According to the ONS data, of the 326 neighbourhoods in Cornwall, 46 were among the top 20 per cent for 'Most income-deprived in England.'

Out of those same 326 neighbourhoods, seven were in the top 20 per cent 'Least income-deprived in England.

In the least deprived neighbourhood in Cornwall, 3.1% of people are estimated to be income-deprived.

In the most deprived neighbourhood, 43.5% of people are estimated to be income-deprived. The gap between these two, which we will call internal disparity, is 40.4 percentage points in Cornwall.

The ONS data also notes that a small deprivation gap does not necessarily imply there is no deprivation, it may just mean income deprivation is evenly spread throughout the local authority, rather than concentrated in a few neighbourhoods.
