Cornwall and much of the westcountry is set to be braced for heavy winds and rain in the coming days.

Forecasting service the Met Office has issued a yellow warning of persistent heavy rain from 9pm on Wednesday, January 11 until 5pm the following day - a total of 20 hours.

The service has predicted up to 15-30mm of rain (60-80mm on higher grounds), while it warned of 45mph winds inland as well as 60mph winds on the coast.

A statement from the Met Office said: "A spell of persistent rain will begin on Wednesday evening, spreading east across parts of England and Wales through Thursday.

"The rain is expected to be heavy at times, particularly across higher parts of southwest England and Wales, while periods of lighter, more intermittent rain are possible away from high ground.

"Rainfall accumulations through the period are widely expected to be 15-30 mm, but peak totals of 60-80 mm could build up over higher ground.

"In addition, very strong west or southwest winds are expected, producing gusts to 45 mph inland and 60 mph along some coasts and across high ground, with the peak in the winds most likely on Wednesday night."

The service added what people should be expecting:

• Flooding of a few homes and businesses is likely

• Bus and train services probably affected with journey times taking longer

• Spray and flooding on roads probably making journey times longer

• Some interruption to power supplies and other services is possible
