There were not many games that survived the weather but Wendron Utd vs Callington Town was one of them, writes Joss Bray.

With title rivals sidelined, Wendron took the opportunity to extend their lead at the top to four points, with an impressive 8-1 win over their North Cornwall opposition.

In the opening stages there was not much between the teams but Wendron took the lead when Lucas Potts opened the scoring after 25 minutes.

He picked the ball up in midfield, moved forward & from 30 yards struck a superb low shot into the corner of the net.

With half-time approaching the home team began to dominate & in a 15-minute spell scored a further four goals.

First they were awarded a corner kick, which Cameron Wheat headed in, followed by two close range efforts from Charlie Young.

The fifth goal, just before half-time, was excellently constructed and involved four players, with the cross from the left being converted by Ryan Reeve, to make the interval score 5-0.

After the break Callington came out like a new team, determined to make amends, they were dominant for 20 minutes.

In this period they put pressure on the Wendron defence and scored through Alex Lowe.

This proved to be no more than a consolation, as again, like in the first half, Wendron began to take control, having the majority of the play in the latter stages.

It became the Charlie Young Show when he added to his first half goals with another three penalty box strikes in the last 10 minutes, to take his personal tally to 5 goals in the match.

Callington manager Shaun Vincent was obviously disappointed with the scoreline, though it was generally acknowledged that his team had good periods in the match, but were unable to cope when Wendron increased their tempo.

His best player on the day was 16-year-old Sam Rutter who was a tower of strength in the right-back role.
