Cornwall’s main hospital has submitted more plans to build staff accommodation to help tackle the housing crisis.

Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust has submitted a pre-application enquiry to Cornwall Council for its latest proposals.

It indicates plans to demolish the Lamorna, Carlyon and Pendower buildings that are currently on the site and replace them with staff accommodation.

Lamorna is currently used by the integrated health discharge team, reception services manager, patient transport manager, alcohol liaison team and hepatology team.

Carlyon is used by clinical health psychology on the ground floor and annexe, with the finance and procurement departments on the first and second floor.

Pendower is currently home to the trauma, orthopaedics and bariatric secretaries and orthopaedic consultants.

There are two different options for the new buildings are included in the plans.

Option A is for larger blocks of flats, which would create 44 units over four floors, with four residential parking spaces and 16 for hospital staff.

Option B is for smaller blocks, on a similar scale to the existing student accommodation. It would again be over four floors, creating 48 units, with five residential parking spaces but none for hospital staff.

A pre-application form explains that the units would primarily have one bedroom but there could potentially be some two-bedroom units.

The units would be typically used by staff for between six and 12 months.

It adds there is also discussion around a new patient family hotel, in place of Bedruthan, going on to state: “Consideration must be made regarding the relationship between the hotel and new staff accommodation.”

It is the second pre-application enquiry for the Royal Cornwall Hospital site that has been submitted by the hospitals trust to provide accommodation for staff.
