With an early start this morning – the draw for playing position taking place at 8am – the band travelled up yesterday by coach to Torquay, where the championships were held.

The band were drawn to play second, meaning an anxious wait for all the other bands to perform before they found out how they ranked.

There was then a huge cheer in the auditorium as band members and the supporters that had travelled up with them learned they had been placed first in their section.

Principal Ysella Lees accepted the winning trophy on behalf of Porthleven Town Band, watched by musical director Tom Bassett who has coached and directed the band to their win.

The band added: “We couldn’t be more proud - huge thanks to Tom and all our incredible players!”

Helston Town Band were also playing in Torquay today, in a different section of the championship, and have yet to announce their result.
