TWO Cornwall Council owned care home sites are due to be sold to support new care home provision in Cornwall.

The two sites owned by Cornwall Council, Trefula House in St Day and Trengrouse in Helston, are no longer fit for purpose.

Trefula House was taken over by the council following the failure of the care provider in 2019 and is currently being managed and supported by Corserv Care. Trengrouse was one of the sites that transferred back to the council when Cornwall Care handed back the leasehold.

Cornwall Council cabinet met yesterday (March 22) to discuss the options and agreed to move forward with the plan.

Cabinet lead for adult social care and health, Cllr Andy Virr said: "This is an opportunity to free up these sites which are not currently meeting modern standards or customer expectations.

“This will bring much needed modern, fit-for-purpose care home provision into Cornwall, helping Cornwall residents to access the care and support they need, when they need it, resulting in improved outcomes and quality of life for residents.”

The residents at Trefula House will continue to be cared for at the existing premises. There is no plan to close the current site until new premises are built which will take several years. Residents and staff will be supported by the council throughout the process.

As part of a soft market engagement process, ten potential suppliers have come forward with expressions of interest. The council will now undertake a procurement exercise to appoint a provider to develop the sites and negotiate a contract for care services.
