UP to 14 jobs could be under threat at a Falmouth institution after it was issued with a noise abatement notice by Cornwall Council.

The Arwenack Club, formerly the Royal British Legion, in Arwenack Street, Falmouth says it is taking legal advice over the order made nine days ago but this was only a pause in their entertainment.

Since the abatement notice was issued to the club following a complaint from a neighbouring property, it has posted a thank you on its Facebook page to thank everybody for their support.

It said: “Firstly we would like to say a massive thank you for all the support we’ve had off everyone over the last nine days regarding our abatement order issued by Cornwall council….

“We just want to take a minute to make it clear that this is only a pause in our entertainment!! We are now going forward and taking legal action and hope to return very soon with our action packed weekends.”

When the Packet contacted the club it was told they were liaising with their solicitor to consider their next options as it was worrying for all the staff with 14 jobs at stake.

They said the club had a midnight licence with Karaoke on a Friday from 8pm to 11.45pm, a disco on a Saturday night that also runs from eight to eleven forty five and live music on Sunday afternoon which goes from 4pm to 7pm.

In 2013, the Falmouth branch of The Royal British Legion, which had occupied the site for more than 100 years was disbanded.

Following a special general meeting, and in line with Legion rules, branch members elected to amalgamate with the Penryn Branch.

After that it changed its name to the Arwenack Club.

If the council decides someone is causing a statutory noise nuisance they must issue a 'noise abatement' order. This tells the person what they must do to stop making a noise nuisance or else face further legal action.

If someone breaks an abatement order about noise from a factory or business, the penalty can be up to £20,000.

Cornwall Council has been asked for a response.
