A large section of the main road between Helston and Redruth will be closed for at least three days this week, with disruption expected.

As part of Cornwall Council’s planned maintenance work, a road closure will be in place on the B3297 between Helston and Nine Maidens, starting this Monday, while repairs are carried out to the surface of the road at Farms Common.

It runs from the Redruth Road at the Lowertown roundabout in Helston, then through Wendron, Trenear, Crelly, Farms Common, Burras and out to Nine Maidens, and will close the road from 7.30am to 5pm each day. Outside of these times the road will be open as normal.

The council road closure notice is in place from this Monday, April 3 to Friday, April 14, although Cormac has indicated that it is hoped the work will be completed in just three days and finished by the end of this Wednesday, April 5.

Should work take longer than expected, the road will be closed weekdays only.

The council explained: “We need to implement these measures to give our teams a safe working zone and protect road users while the work is carried out.

“We will have marshals on site to support residents and businesses needing local access. All through traffic will need to follow the diversions in place.”

Signs will be in place at major junctions, with diversions routes set up, which the council said were designed to keep disruption “to a minimum.”

“Diversion routes have to be suitable for the type of traffic that would normally use the route. We appreciate they can sometimes be quite lengthy, but in order to carry out the works safely to protect our operatives and road users we need to implement these measures,” it added.

The diversion will take drivers from Helston down The Furry and along part of Penzance Road before turning off at Sithney Common Hill, then heading via Nancegollan to Praze-an-Beeble when drivers will be taken back on the B3280 to meet up with the original road at Nine Maidens, just before Pencoys and Four Lanes.

Access for residents will be maintained through ‘gateways’ manned by traffic marshals. Residents will need to stop at the gateways and staff will help drivers get into, or out of, the roadworks site safely, using the right route.

It comes with a warning that if the teams need access, or have to move machinery out of the way, “there may be significant delays.”

The council goes on to add: “We will always do our best to accommodate day-to-day requirements of people affected by our works, and access will be maintained as much as possible for those people directly impacted by the closure.”

Emergency access will remain at all times.

Anyone who does need access to the roadworks site during that time has been warned to expect uneven road surfaces while the old surface has been removed, as well as raised manholes, gullies and other service boxes, and varying kerb heights when stepping off the footways.
