A surge in popularity has seen a Penryn business double in size due to demand.

When Top Gear Ltd opened electric bikes were a relatively new technology that only a few people owned.

However, since the business moved into Penryn it has continued to grow and now owner Peter Williams has extended the showroom to bring even more options.

He said: “I originally started with electric bikes back in 2004. They were hardly known back then but I enjoyed riding them and trying out the new technology.

“Since we moved into Penryn during 2015, the business has continued to grow and allowed us to further expand our current premises when the retail space next door became available.

“This has given us the opportunity to improve our bike and accessory displays while allowing us to also display the bikes in a better way and increase our product range.

“With the extended showroom we were offered the iconic Raleigh brand, which has fitted in excellently with our existing brands and given our customers even more choice.”

In addition to Raleigh the store offers Haibike, Kalkhoff, Focus, MiRider, Wisper, Corratec and Neomouv.

Peter added: “With the increased level of stock we have invested heavily, showing our confidence in the growing e-bike market. Despite the current financial situation, there is clearly still a great demand for electric bikes as a healthy and economical option to other forms of transport.

“With the expansion it has also allowed us to take on several more accessory brands and to expand our ever popular repair workshop.”

Top Gear has full-time e-bike repairers on site to help customers keep their bikes in top order, providing specialist knowledge, parts and maintenance.

Customers can also see the bikes, try them out and compare the different brands.

James Ward, Top Gear’s e-bike shop manager, said: “This provides a vastly superior service compared to buying online where you even have to part assemble the bikes when they arrive.

“Online bike purchases also need to be returned to the supplying organisation for warranty repairs which can be a nightmare.”

He said many people were turning to e-bikes in place of a car, saving on fuel costs and also the health benefits.

As well as the shop expansion, Top Gear is also looking to develop e-bike maintenance training in their new space, as well as group get togethers so riders can buddy up and make new friends and explore new routes together.

The shop is also currently looking for an additional member of staff due to the expansion, to work in both the sales and repair workshop.
