They are a familiar sound heard across Helston, at weddings, each Sunday morning – and heralding the start of Flora Day.

But the bells of Helston’s parish church of St Michael’s would have risked falling silent without new bell ropes to replace the worn and ageing ones in situ.

With the cost coming in at £1,850, fundraising was needed to help cover the cost.

Captain of the bell ringers Bob Woods put out a notice on Facebook saying that he had managed to source donations from clubs and organisations to cover £1,300 of that total – but had a shortfall of £500.

He was therefore appealing for help from the community to keep the bells ringing.

Mr Woods said: “As a tower, the ringing team of 12 are volunteers and we self-finance running the maintenance of the bells and belfry.

“However, it is unlikely that this year our tower will have sufficient visitors or other events to raise £500.

“So I am asking if there is anybody or an organisation that would consider making a donation towards the purchase of bell ropes for St Michael's Church bell tower?

“Any amount towards the cost would be gratefully received.”

The bells are rung every Sunday before the weekly service, as well as Tuesday evening for bell practice. They herald the arrival of Flora Day at 6.30am, for the half an hour before the Morning Dance, as well as at weddings, civic ceremonies and certain royal and national events.

In an update, Mr Woods has said that a number of pledges mean the shortfall should be covered – but an online fundraising page has now been set up to help ensure the money is raised, any additional funds going towards their upkeep and further improvements.

Mr Woods posted it with an invitation, saying: “Any donors are welcome to visit the tower and see the ringers in action, and see how our project is evolving and maybe even have a go at bell ringing!”
