People living in and around Helston can now access medical treatment much closer to home following the reopening of the town's minor injury unit.

MIU at Helston Community Hospital was forced to shut down due to unforeseen staff sickness a few months ago, leaving many public members to travel to other units across Cornwall.

However, according to the Helston Community Hospital website, MIU is now open but this time will be run on a limited service. The new times and days will be Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8am until 4pm with hopes of opening additional hours.

Patients needing medical treatment on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and weekends will be redirected to other hospitals.

Although the unit is only on a limited service for now, additional hours could be added in the near future.

A spokesperson said: "We’re are continuing to recruit and develop our own staff with a view to opening additional hours.

"If there are any minor injury-trained nurses in the area or nurses who want to return to practice, we’d love to hear from them."

MIUs are located in community hospitals and are run by highly skilled specialist clinicians, who can and are able to treat a range of minor conditions, which have occurred during the previous 14 days including.

  • sprains and strains
  • minor fractures
  • traumatic wound infections (not surgical wounds)
  • minor burns and scalds
  • head injuries (where the person has not been unconscious)
  • insect and animal bites and stings
  • minor eye injuries
  • cuts, bruising and grazes.
