Residents are up in arms over another application to build a dwelling on public open green space in Porthleven.

This is the second time an application has been made for the plot in Reeves Close, the first was withdrawn in December after objections from neighbours.

The Cornwall Planning group has submitted a design and access statement on an application to build a dwelling on the site on behalf of a Mr and Mrs Johns, although no details on the design of the building are given.

However in conclusion the application says they believe the details submitted: "Clearly show that the site can be developed in a way that the locality will not be adversely affected, indeed, there is a clear opportunity to provide a high-quality development to meet the needs of present and future generations.

It adds: "Overall, the proposed development of the site would represent sustainable development, supported by the NPPF and the policies of the emerging CLP and as such, we believe Cornwall Council should support the principle of the proposals contained within this formal planning application."

However the application already has ten comments of objection on the Cornwall Council planning portal from people who say the open space is a wildlife haven and provides a green amenity for local people.

Mrs Pamela Kitchen is one the of the objectors who says building a property on the green space is detrimental to the area and to wildlife.

"There is even a hedgehog highway cut into a neighbouring fence," she says in her objection. "Originally it was supposedly for use by residents and was required as part of the original planning application and as far as I know nothing has changed so therefore it should be left alone for all to enjoy as a beautiful peaceful open area."

Miss Harriet Turner said: "This plot of land as a green space was insisted on by the planning department when Reeves Close was developed and I see no reason why this has changed. In fact it is more important now than ever.

"I am totally against any development of this land and support refusal of this outline planning application.

"The land is not just 'a redundant infill plot' but is a community space which is used for recreation and leisure and is home to wildlife."

Porthleven Town Council has yet to conside the application but a final decision will be made by Cornwall Council.
