At a time when ‘woke’ has been weaponised by right wing politicians and media, it takes a brave person to declare themselves officially woke, especially when they have just been sworn in as mayor- and they’re a woman.

But Falmouth’s newest mayor Kirstie Edwards is not one to shy away from controversy, even if it is just wanting people to be kind and tolerant to each other.

Kirstie has openly told of her earlier struggles with her mental health, the fact she was on a low wage, lives in a council house and used to struggle to look after her family.

On Monday night at the Princess Pavilion she promised things were going to get spicy.

Well I don’t know how spicy things are going to get but declaring yourself ‘woke’ is a red rag to a bull for some people, and already some of the comments have started on social media.

Being a woman unfortunately in this day and age, or any day and age to be honest, means some of the kickback will be ‘misogynistic’.

But it’s good to have Kirstie as a breath of fresh air as the leader of the town council and she probably knows exactly what she’s let herself in for and good on her I say!

You can’t be the captain of a ship without splicing a few main braces I say, and I should know, once I find out what splicing the main brace means.

So good luck to Kirstie it’s good to have someone who wants to try something different on a town council, and let’s face it they can be a bit staid.

With Kirsty in charge I have the feeling things are going to get a little stormy.
