A YOUNG woman from Truro who was caught using her mobile phone behind the wheel whilst disqualified from driving has been sentenced by a court in Cornwall.

Megan Emily Mcgrath, aged 23, of Goonvrea in Perranarworthal, near Truro, appeared in front of magistrates at Truro Magistrates' Court on Thursday, May 25 on one count of driving a handheld mobile phone or device while driving a motor vehicle on a road; one count of using a motor vehicle on a road or public place without third party insurance; and one count of driving whilst disqualified. 

The offences took place on Thursday, October 15 on the A390 at Treyew Road in Truro where Mcgrath was found to be using a mobile phone while driving a black Renault Clio. McGrath was also found to have no third-party insurance and was also driving whilst being disqualified from holding or obtaining a licence. 

She pleaded guilty to all three offences. 

During her sentencing, McGrath was disqualified for holding or obtaining a driving licence for four months and had her driving record endorsed.

She was also made to pay a fine of £120 as well as being made to pay a surcharge to fund victim services of £48 and pay costs of £85 to the Crown Prosecution Service.

The court also noted how McGrath's guilty pleas were taken into account when imposing the sentence. 

According to the sentencing council, offences such as driving without insurance have a maximum sentence of an unlimited fine alongside the endorsement of a driving licence and penalty points.
