Camborne and Redruth Conservatives have selected a new Parliamentary candidate after the current MP George Eustice announced he would not be seeking re-election.

The Camborne and Redruth Conservatives Association met at the Penventon Hotel in Redruth on Tuesday to select their new Parliamentary Candidate for the next General Election, Connor Donnithorne.

This follows the announcement by the Rt Hon George Eustice MP, Former Secretary of State for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs and MP for Camborne and Redruth, to not seek re-election after 13 years as the local MP.

The association said that, following a strong contest, it had duly elected Cllr Connor Donnithorne as their new candidate.

Cllr Connor Donnithorne, 26, was born and went to school in Cornwall and helped set up Seasmiths Fish + Chips, a multi-award-winning family business.

They opened their first shop in Porthtowan in March 2020. Connor and his partner Elsie have since opened and run their new restaurant in Wadebridge, which opened in July 2022. He lives in the constituency with his young family.

In 2021, Connor was elected as the Cornwall Councillor for Redruth Central, Carharrack and St Day. He secured a 35 per cent vote swing, the highest in Cornwall, and became the first Conservative ever elected in this division, beating former Independent Cabinet member – Mark Kaczmarek.

In November 2022, Connor was appointed as Cabinet Member for Transport, with responsibility for highways and supporting public transport.

Following the announcement, current Member of Parliament George Eustice said, “Connor Donnithorne lives in Blackwater, runs a small business in the constituency and understands the issues in our area through his work representing St Day and Carharrack on the council. He will make an exceptional candidate for the Conservative Party at the next election, and I will be giving him all my support.”

Newly selected candidate, Connor Donnithorne said, “I feel really proud to be selected to fight for the people of Camborne, Redruth, and Hayle as their local Parliamentary candidate. I live in the constituency.

"I set up a business in the constituency. And I am raising my young family in this constituency. I know the issues that matter to local people because they matter to me and my family too. Parliament has never needed strong local and fresh Cornish voices as much as it does now to fight for local people, businesses, and families.

"I look forward to spending every day from now until the next election speaking to people and helping address their local concerns.”

Association Chairman Geoff Penhaligon added, “The process of selecting a candidate was keenly contested by a number of strong applicants and I am pleased that we have now selected a local, Cornish candidate in Connor Donnithorne, who lives and works in the constituency.

"Connor will be a strong and reliable voice for our area and continue the good work of our current Member of Parliament, George Eustice, building on his achievements.”
