‘Mr Bean’ and Spiderman were among hundreds who flooded to Penzance Promenade last weekend to celebrate the town Rotary club’s centenary year.

This event was marked with a display where proud vintage car owners showcased their cars on to raise money for Cornwall Air Ambulance.

At this event 100 classic and vintage cars ranging from two steam cars made in 1908 and 1909 to the newest car, a Bentley, were set up against the backdrop of the stunning Mount’s Bay.

Among the cars was a Morris Mini made famous by Mr Bean - complete with cardboard cutout of the man himself - a yellow bubble car, a Messerschmitt KR 200 and an Austin 7 Nippy.

On the day crowds of people of all ages admired the cars and were able to inspect them close up as well as talk to the owners on the sunny afternoon.

Visitors were encouraged to offer donations in support of charities chosen by the Penzance Rotary including The Cornwall Air Ambulance. A total in excess of £600 is now known to have been raised.

A senior steward at the event, Jon Symons, said he was “really pleased with the event” and that the licensed food businesses on the promenade all said that they had a busy day.

He added that this was an opportunity for vintage and classic car owners to present their “pride and joy” to the public for a good cause.

John Underhill, newly installed president of Penzance Rotary for the next 12 months, said hard work, co-operation and mutual support had resulted in a most impressive display.

He added: "Everyone I spoke to said it was a superb show and brought the Prom to life."

All the cars came from car owners across West Cornwall, while Humphry Davy School provided live musical entertainment.

The deputy mayor of Penzance, Cllr Will Elliot, attended and the Penzance Town Crier – Phil Northcott accompanied by his consort Rosie Northcott - shouted a welcome to everyone.

The town crier thanked the Penzance Rotary for organising the show, and the exhibitors and public for attending.

The Penzance Rotary Club was founded in 1923 and ever since has been serving the community.

Unfortunately, these events are becoming harder to organise and put on since the Penzance Rotary only has 16 members, with Mr Symons saying that the club is always looking for new members.
